Bicycle Friendly Driving Course

The next Bicycle Friendly Driver course will be held on Wednesday, July 11, at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library.   The course is useful for cyclists as well as motorists.
The Bicycle Friendly Driver course is a one-hour interactive class aimed at educating drivers on the best and safest ways to share the road with people on bicycles. Developed by FC Bikes in collaboration with Bike Fort Collins, the program has been adapted for Lawrence audiences by LBC secretary Kirsten Yunuba Stephens.
This course answers questions like:
–How do most crashes involving motor vehicles and bicyclists occur?
–What is the safest way to make a right-hand turn when bike lanes
and/or bicyclists are present?
–Why do bicyclists ride in the middle of the road?
Additional topics include:
Common crashes and how to avoid them
What’s legal and what’s not legal, for both motorists and bicyclists
Why bicyclists “take the lane” and what motorists should do in response
Why sharing the road is the safest alternative for both motorists and bicyclists.
Attendance is open to everyone, no need to RSVP.

Tour de Chicken Creek 2017

Join the Lawrence Bicycle Club on Sunday, November 5, for our annual Tour de Chicken Creek gravel grinder.

Route maps:

Start time:  8:30 a.m.  Please note that daylight savings ends on that day.

Start Location:  Lawrence Riverfront Park, west of the Tee Pee junction, which is the intersection of 59 and 24/40 highways (E1450 and N1800) in North Lawrence.  To get to the park, go west over the levee and down toward the river.  (Note:  Google maps for ‘Riverfront Park’ will NOT get you to the right place.)

Length:  21 and 40 mile options

Registration:  $5 cash or check day-of registration only

The route will be similar to the 2016 route.  The ride no longer follows the Chicken Creek south of town but we’ve kept the name in honor of some past epic rides.

There will be one SAG with snacks and water. The roads are hard-packed, with rolling hills and limited motor traffic.

Come ride with us on November 5!

Bicycle Friendly Driver Program

The Lawrence Bicycle Club invites you to attend a Bicycle Friendly Driver program on Tuesday Sept. 12 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Jay Room on the first floor of the Kansas Union, on KU’s main campus.  Developed by the city of Fort Collins but shared freely with clubs and organizations across the nation, the program has been adapted for Lawrence audiences by LBC secretary Kirsten Yunuba Stephens.  The information is useful for drivers and cyclists, suggesting ways both can make roads safer for everyone who uses them.

The event is part of KU’s Lunch ‘n’ Learn series but is free and open to the public.  KU employees who attend can get HealthQuest points for participating.
