Road and Gravel
INFORMATION FOR REGISTERED RIDERS
Routes and Maps: Electronic (Ride With GPS) and printable maps, cue sheets and SAG information are available on our Routes Page. The routes will be marked. There will be a limited number of printed maps and cue sheets at the ride start, and they will be in black and white. If you want maps and cues printed in color, please print them before you arrive. If you want to be certain to have printed maps and cues, print them before you arrive. The maps show the intersections and stretches of road requiring greater caution, so please review these before you ride.
Check-in: Check-in and packet-pickup before the ride is required. You have two opportunities to check in:
OR
Packets will contain your rider wristbands, food truck vouchers for lunch after the ride, and information about future events. The wristbands are printed with a rider number for your safety. In case of an accident, we will be able to quickly identify the rider by their number. Please wear your wristband on your Left Wrist.
If you pre-ordered a T-Shirt or 55th Anniversary Octoginta kit, please pick them up at check-in on Saturday or Sunday.
Ride Start and Schedule: Depart from Broken Arrow Park, between 7:30 am - 9 am. All riders must start by 9 am. Road and Gravel riders will follow the same route until mile 11, where Gravel riders will turn left onto E 900 Road. The course will close at 4 pm. We strongly encourage riders planning on the 80 mile Road, or 67 mile Gravel route, to roll out early in the start window. There is an 11 am cutoff time at mile 33 on the 80-mile Road course just after the Appanoose SAG. Riders reaching this point after 11 am will be diverted onto the 62 mile road route.
Rider Assistance: FOR EMERGENCIES CALL 911 FIRST. Then, text or call rider support, (785) 218-3260, or flag down a HAM operator. For non-emergency assistance call rider support or flag down a HAM operator.
Safety: Safe rides are LBC's top priority. Please respect and follow the rules of the road. Most of the roads along the routes have light traffic, but this is an open course, and you will encounter vehicles on the route.
- Observe stop signs and stop lights -- it's the law. Be extra cautious crossing US 59 Hwy, US 56 Hwy and KS 68 Hwy. And Gravel riders, be extra extra cautious crossing US 56 Hwy northbound.
- Cyclists may ride a maximum of two abreast per Kansas Law, and only on roads with adequate shoulders and modest traffic. Otherwise, ride single file/paceline and as close as is practicable to the right-side edge of the road. Do not cross the center line. Keep right where sight lines are limited by hills and curves. Ride single file where there is two-way bicycle traffic on narrow roads. This includes County Routes 1039 and 1 approaching Lone Star Lake and the first SAG, and Thomas Road and Colorado Road North and East of the second SAG at Appanoose. 80 mile Road riders, the Franklin County Sheriff's office asks that you take extra care on the rolling hills north of Pomona, and the corners south of Pomona, which limit sight lines. Gravel riders, keep right approaching blind hills and blind corners. If you can't see oncoming traffic, oncoming drivers can't see you.
- Pacelines: Do not overlap wheels. Ride a minimum of 1 foot behind the rider in front.
- Do not pass cyclists on the right.
- When stopped, move completely off the road to allow motorists to pass.
- Communication: Signal/announce when passing, turning, stopping, or encountering hazards in the road.
- Equipment: Helmets are required. We encourage a headlight and taillight, especially if you plan to start early. A bicycle in good working order, a flat repair kit and pump, and filled water bottles or hydration packs will make your ride so much more enjoyable and safe.
- Road surface: Road riders -- there is newer chip seal on the 80 mile route between the second and third SAGs. Exercise caution in the corners. Gravel riders -- gravel is gravel.
- Deer crossing: Many stretches, especially along the gravel routes, have trees growing close on both sides. This is lovely, but also provides cover for deer. On downhills, keep a watchful eye for deer crossing the road ahead of you.
