Banff Film Festival - Saturday

World-Renowned Film Festival Celebrating Outdoor Adventure Is Back for Its Twenty-Third Year at Liberty Hall

LAWRENCE—For the twenty-third year, a world-renowned festival of films will find its way to Northeast Kansas. The Banff Mountain Film Festival presented by Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, a collection of the best films spotlighting mountain sports and outdoor adventures, will be shown on Friday and Saturday, September 6-7, at Liberty Hall in Downtown Lawrence. These films feature rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, base jumping, trail running, back-country hiking excursions, and more. The festival, presented by Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, will screen different films spread over the two evenings. Tickets are available from Liberty Hall and Ticketmaster.

Each year, the Banff Mountain Film Festival presents the most creative and inspiring examples of outdoor adventure filmmaking from around the world. The Banff Mountain Film Festival, a presentation of The Banff Centre (of Banff, Canada) was originally started in 1976 and featured 10 films with just 450 people in attendance. The festival’s film selections are the award-winning entries from the screening and judging held at The Banff Centre. The annual Lawrence film festival screening has regularly been a sold-out event, attracting more than 1,200 attendees.

Among the sixteen films selected to be shown in Lawrence, there will be three particularly noteworthy films:

Eternal Flame: After having climbed the Eternal Flame route on Nameless Tower in Pakistan (6,200m), French BASE jumpers Eric Jamet and Antoine Pecher combine the ascent with one of the most beautiful BASE jumps imaginable. Following in the footsteps of pioneer jumpers from 1990, the duo of friends devour adventure and all it offers, beauty, power and anxiety all contribute to the experience. This film was voted the Best Film On Mountain Sports at the Festival in Banff.

Subterranean: In a remarkable year, two gritty teams of hobbyist cavers are poised to break records for the longest and deepest caves in Canada. After discovering a flooded underground chamber, Katie, a daytime accountant, becomes obsessed with returning to the Bisaro Anima cave in the Rockies to push the caving depth record. At the same time, a passionate Vancouver Island team is attempting to link two tunnel systems to create the longest known cave in the country. From abyssal, muddy crawls, to heart-pounding vertical pits, and underwater squeezes, these are places where no person has been before. Winner of the Best Film on Adventure.

Pioneers: Tandem XC Skiing: After winning the American Birkebeiner - the largest cross-country ski race in North America - Joe Dubay was disqualified for wearing the wrong bib. Now, 11 years later, Joe and his former roommate who lent him the bib, Chris, document their return to the Birkebeiner to pioneer a new sport: tandem cross-country skiing. Consistently voted the most popular film on the Tour. Each night’s program features two-plus hours of films of varying lengths along with on-stage presentations, festival sponsor giveaways, and an exciting, celebratory atmosphere like no other. This year’s tickets are all reserved seating and are available from Liberty Hall and Ticketmaster.
